Assistive Technology

Definitions

Assistive technology: Equipment or software that can increase, maintain, or improve the capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Also, technology that is used by everyone, such as spell check, can be particularly helpful to people with learning disabilities. (definition adapted from LD Online)

Bookshare: Provides accessible e-books in DAISY format; these books are made available to students with learning disabilities. Under U.S. copyright law, students must have purchased a copy of the book in order to download a book from Bookshare.
Books can be download and read via special software (Read:OutLoud or Read2Go)

DAISY: Digital Accessible Information System; special formatting and structure for accessible ebooks that allows for navigation, bookmarking, etc.

Dragon: Speech-to-text program. Available as an app on iPhone and iPad for free. Computer software is also available.


Learning Ally: Formerly RFB&D. Provides accessible audio books in DAISY format.

Read:OutLoud: Software (for Mac or PC) used to read books from Bookshare. A text-to-speech program that also allows for notetaking/highlighting.

Read2Go: App (for iPad or iPhone) used to read books from Bookshare. A text-to-speech program that also allows for notetaking/highlighting.
